Suitsetatud heeringa ja kartulivorm, or Smoked Herring and Potato Casserole, is a traditional Estonian dish that combines the rich flavors of smoked herring with the comforting texture of potatoes. This hearty casserole is perfect for a cozy family dinner or a special occasion.
Ingredients
- 500g smoked herring fillets, skinless and boneless
- 1kg potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 200ml sour cream
- 100ml heavy cream
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish.
- Arrange half of the sliced onions on top of the potatoes.
- Place half of the smoked herring fillets on top of the onions.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onions, and smoked herring.
- In a bowl, mix the sour cream, heavy cream, salt, and pepper.
- Pour the cream mixture over the layered ingredients in the baking dish.
- Dot the top of the casserole with butter.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
