Swedish Cabbage Rolls (Svenska kåldolmar)
Svenska kåldolmar, or Swedish Cabbage Rolls, are a classic Nordic comfort food. This dish features flavorful ground meat and rice wrapped in tender cabbage leaves and simmered in a rich, savory sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 head of cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup uncooked rice
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup tomato sauce
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and blanch them in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside to cool.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, rice, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and allspice. Mix until well combined.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll up, tucking in the sides to enclose the filling.
- In a large pot, arrange the cabbage rolls in a single layer. Pour the beef broth and tomato sauce over the rolls. Cover and simmer for 1 hour, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
