Swedish Meatballs (Köttbullar)
Köttbullar, or Swedish meatballs, are a classic dish from Western European cuisine. These flavorful meatballs are often served with lingonberry sauce and creamy mashed potatoes, making them a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, egg, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
- Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, sprinkle the flour over the drippings and whisk until smooth.
- Gradually add the beef broth and bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.
- Stir in the heavy cream and return the meatballs to the skillet. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve the meatballs with lingonberry sauce and mashed potatoes.
