Sweet And Sour Gujarati Dal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp jaggery (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 6-8 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear. Then, soak the dal in water for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Transfer the soaked dal to a pressure cooker, add 2 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy.
  3. In a separate pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  4. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.
  6. Add the cooked dal to the pan and mix well. Add jaggery, tamarind paste, and adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
  7. Let the dal simmer for 5-7 minutes on low heat. Adjust the seasoning as per taste.
  8. Once done, serve the Sweet and Sour Gujarati Dal hot with steamed rice or roti.
