Sweet and Sour Pineapple Gojju (ಅನನಸ್ ಗೊಜ್ಜು)
ಅನನಸ್ ಗೊಜ್ಜು (Sweet and Sour Pineapple Gojju) is a traditional Udupi dish that combines the sweetness of pineapple with the tanginess of tamarind and the spiciness of Indian spices. It is a delightful accompaniment to steamed rice or dosa.
Ingredients
- 2 cups chopped pineapple
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup jaggery
- 1 lemon-sized ball of tamarind, soaked in water
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2-3 dried red chilies
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Few curry leaves
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add fenugreek seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Squeeze the soaked tamarind to extract the pulp and add it to the pan along with turmeric powder, salt, and jaggery. Cook for 5 minutes.
- Add the chopped pineapple and cook until it becomes soft and the mixture thickens.
- Finish with a pinch of asafoetida and mix well.
- Remove from heat and serve the ಅನನಸ್ ಗೊಜ್ಜು hot with steamed rice or dosa.
