Sweet and Sour Pineapple Gojju (ಅನನಸ್ ಗೊಜ್ಜು)

ಅನನಸ್ ಗೊಜ್ಜು (Sweet and Sour Pineapple Gojju) is a traditional Udupi dish that combines the sweetness of pineapple with the tanginess of tamarind and the spiciness of Indian spices. It is a delightful accompaniment to steamed rice or dosa.

Sweet and Sour Pineapple Gojju (ಅನನಸ್ ಗೊಜ್ಜು)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chopped pineapple
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup jaggery
  • 1 lemon-sized ball of tamarind, soaked in water
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2-3 dried red chilies
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Few curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add fenugreek seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  3. Squeeze the soaked tamarind to extract the pulp and add it to the pan along with turmeric powder, salt, and jaggery. Cook for 5 minutes.
  4. Add the chopped pineapple and cook until it becomes soft and the mixture thickens.
  5. Finish with a pinch of asafoetida and mix well.
  6. Remove from heat and serve the ಅನನಸ್ ಗೊಜ್ಜು hot with steamed rice or dosa.
