Sweet Bread (romanian Cozonac)
Sweet Bread (Romanian Cozonac) is a traditional Eastern European dessert that is typically enjoyed during holidays and special occasions. This rich and sweet bread is filled with a delicious mixture of nuts, cocoa, and sugar, making it a perfect treat for any celebration.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, sugar, melted butter, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 10-15 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the chopped walnuts, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar to make the filling.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it in half. Roll out each half into a rectangle and spread the nut filling evenly over the dough. Roll up the dough tightly, tucking in the ends, and place each loaf in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover the pans with a kitchen towel and let the loaves rise for an additional 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaves for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. Let them cool before slicing and serving.
