Sweet Saffron Bread, also known as Sheermal, is a traditional bread from Awadhi Cuisine that is infused with the delicate flavors of saffron and sweetened with sugar. It is a popular treat during festive occasions and is best enjoyed with a cup of hot tea or as a dessert.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a small bowl, soak the saffron threads in warm milk for 10 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
- Add the saffron-infused milk and ghee to the dry ingredients and mix to form a dough.
- Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls.
- Flatten each ball into a disc and place them on a baking sheet.
- Cover and let them rest for 15 minutes.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the bread for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from the skillet and serve warm.
