Syrian Date and Walnut Cookies (Ma'amoul)
Ma'amoul is a traditional Syrian cookie filled with sweet dates and crunchy walnuts. These delicate cookies are often enjoyed during special occasions and holidays.
Ingredients
- 2 cups semolina
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup rose water
- 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
- 1/2 cup walnuts, finely chopped
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the semolina, melted butter, sugar, and rose water until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, mix the chopped dates and walnuts together.
- Take a small portion of the semolina dough and flatten it in your palm. Place a small amount of the date and walnut mixture in the center, then carefully enclose the filling with the dough, shaping it into a ball.
- Place the filled cookies on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until the bottoms are golden brown.
- Allow the ma'amoul to cool before serving.
