Szechuan Tofu (四川豆腐)
四川豆腐 (Szechuan Tofu) is a spicy and flavorful dish that originates from the Szechuan province of China. It is a popular dish in American Chinese cuisine, known for its bold and aromatic flavors.
Ingredients
- 1 block of firm tofu, cut into cubes
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon Szechuan peppercorns
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 tablespoon chili paste
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable broth
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce and Szechuan peppercorns. Marinate the tofu cubes in this mixture for 10 minutes.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the marinated tofu cubes and cook until golden brown on all sides. Remove the tofu from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, add the garlic, ginger, green onions, and red bell pepper. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.
- Add the chili paste, rice vinegar, sugar, and vegetable broth to the pan. Stir to combine.
- Return the cooked tofu to the pan and toss to coat in the sauce. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Serve the Szechuan tofu hot, garnished with additional green onions if desired.
