Taameya (falafel With Tahini Sauce)
Taameya, also known as falafel, is a popular Syrian Jewish dish made from spiced fava beans and/or chickpeas. It is typically served as a street food or part of a mezze spread. This recipe pairs the crispy, flavorful taameya with a creamy tahini sauce for a delicious combination of textures and flavors.
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried fava beans or chickpeas, soaked overnight
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt to taste
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1/2 cup tahini
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Drain the soaked fava beans or chickpeas and place them in a food processor.
- Add the onion, garlic, parsley, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, and salt to the food processor.
- Pulse the mixture until it forms a coarse paste. Transfer the mixture to a bowl.
- Stir in the baking powder. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour.
- While the mixture chills, prepare the tahini sauce by whisking together the tahini, water, lemon juice, garlic, and salt. Set aside.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat.
- Form the chilled taameya mixture into small balls or patties and carefully place them in the hot oil.
- Fry the taameya until golden brown and crispy, then transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve the taameya hot with the tahini sauce for dipping.
