Tagine Djaj is a traditional Algerian dish that features tender fish cooked with olives and preserved lemons, resulting in a flavorful and aromatic tagine.
Ingredients
- 1 lb white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup green olives, pitted
- 2 preserved lemons, cut into wedges
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup water
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh cilantro, for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a tagine or large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, ground turmeric, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Place the fish fillets on top of the onion and spice mixture in the tagine or skillet.
- Add the green olives and preserved lemon wedges around the fish.
- Pour the water over the fish and season with salt and pepper.
- Cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
