Tagine Djaj (algerian Lamb And Chickpea Tagine)
Tagine Djaj is a traditional Algerian dish featuring tender lamb, hearty chickpeas, and a blend of aromatic spices. This slow-cooked stew is perfect for bringing warmth and flavor to any gathering.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lamb, cut into chunks
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a tagine or large pot over medium heat.
- Add the lamb chunks and brown on all sides, then remove and set aside.
- Saute the chopped onion and minced garlic until softened.
- Stir in the ground cumin, coriander, paprika, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper, and cook for 1 minute.
- Return the lamb to the pot and add the diced tomatoes, chickpeas, and chicken broth.
- Season with salt and pepper, then bring to a simmer.
- Cover and cook over low heat for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the lamb is tender.
- Serve the tagine djaj hot, garnished with fresh cilantro or parsley.
