Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef stew meat, cut into chunks
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 2 star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Heat the cooking oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the garlic, ginger, and onion. Sauté until fragrant.
  2. Add the beef stew meat to the pot and brown on all sides.
  3. Pour in the soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and sugar. Stir to coat the beef.
  4. Add the tomatoes, star anise, and cinnamon sticks. Pour in the water and bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 2 hours or until the beef is tender.
  6. Once the beef is tender, uncover the pot and continue to simmer until the sauce thickens.
  7. Remove the ginger slices, star anise, and cinnamon sticks before serving.
