Tangy Tomato Thokku
Tangy Tomato Thokku is a traditional South Indian condiment that is bursting with flavors. This spicy and tangy tomato relish is a versatile accompaniment that pairs well with rice, idli, dosa, or even bread. It's a must-have in every Tamil household!
Ingredients
- 1 kg ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup sesame oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
- 10-12 dry red chilies
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 cup jaggery, grated
Instructions
- Heat sesame oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add fenugreek seeds, dry red chilies, and asafoetida.
- Add the finely chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook on medium heat until the tomatoes turn mushy.
- Add grated jaggery and continue to cook until the thokku thickens and the oil separates from the mixture.
- Allow it to cool and store in an airtight container.
