Tapioca Biryani, also known as Kappa Biriyani, is a traditional dish from Kerala Cuisine that combines the unique flavors of tapioca with aromatic spices and tender meat or vegetables.

Tapioca Biryani (kappa Biriyani)

Ingredients

  • 500g tapioca, peeled and cubed
  • 250g boneless chicken or vegetables of your choice
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 2 tbsp biryani masala
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil the tapioca in salted water until tender, then drain and set aside.
  2. In a separate pan, heat ghee and sauté the onions until golden brown.
  3. Add the chicken or vegetables and cook until they are almost done.
  4. Stir in the tomatoes, biryani masala, turmeric powder, and red chili powder.
  5. Add the boiled tapioca and mix well.
  6. Layer the tapioca mixture with yogurt in a heavy-bottomed pan and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Serve hot with raita and pickle.
