Tarta Chaja, also known as Chaja Cake, is a traditional dessert from Montevideo, Uruguay. This delicious cake is made with layers of sponge cake, dulce de leche, whipped cream, and peaches, creating a delightful combination of flavors and textures.

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 can (14 oz) dulce de leche
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 2 peaches, sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Gently fold in the flour and baking powder until well combined.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased and floured round cake pan.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the cake cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, slice the cake horizontally into two layers.
  8. Spread a layer of dulce de leche on the bottom cake layer.
  9. Top with a layer of whipped cream and sliced peaches.
  10. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the layers of dulce de leche, whipped cream, and peaches.
  11. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving.
