Tarte Tatin (Upside-Down Caramelized Apple Tart)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds (680g) apples, such as Granny Smith or Gala, peeled, cored, and quartered
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed if frozen

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Melt 1/4 cup (55g) of butter in a 9-inch (23cm) ovenproof skillet over medium heat.
  3. Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the melted butter. Arrange the apple quarters in a circular pattern, rounded side down, in the skillet.
  4. Cook the apples and sugar for about 15 minutes, or until the sugar and butter caramelize and turn golden brown.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry to fit the size of the skillet. Place the pastry over the apples and tuck in the edges around the apples.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Let the tart cool for 5 minutes, then carefully invert it onto a serving platter.
  8. Serve the Tarte Tatin warm, with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
