Tarte Tatin (Upside-Down Caramelized Apple Tart)

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds (680g) apples, such as Granny Smith or Gala, peeled, cored, and quartered
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, divided
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed if frozen
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Melt 1/4 cup (55g) of butter in a 9-inch (23cm) ovenproof skillet over medium heat.
- Sprinkle the sugar evenly over the melted butter. Arrange the apple quarters in a circular pattern, rounded side down, in the skillet.
- Cook the apples and sugar for about 15 minutes, or until the sugar and butter caramelize and turn golden brown.
- Roll out the puff pastry to fit the size of the skillet. Place the pastry over the apples and tuck in the edges around the apples.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
- Let the tart cool for 5 minutes, then carefully invert it onto a serving platter.
- Serve the Tarte Tatin warm, with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
