Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef brisket, cut into chunks
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 thumb-sized ginger, sliced
- 2 star anise
- 3 dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked and halved
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 3 tbsp rock sugar
- 1 tsp five-spice powder
- 4 cups water
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add garlic, ginger, star anise, and cinnamon stick. Sauté until fragrant.
- Add beef chunks and brown on all sides.
- Pour in soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and rock sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add dried shiitake mushrooms, five-spice powder, and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
- Once the beef is tender, remove the lid and continue to simmer until the sauce thickens.
- Serve the Teochew Style Braised Beef hot with steamed rice.
