Ingredients

  • 2 lbs beef brisket, cut into chunks
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 thumb-sized ginger, sliced
  • 2 star anise
  • 3 dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked and halved
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp rock sugar
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add garlic, ginger, star anise, and cinnamon stick. Sauté until fragrant.
  2. Add beef chunks and brown on all sides.
  3. Pour in soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and rock sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  4. Add dried shiitake mushrooms, five-spice powder, and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
  5. Once the beef is tender, remove the lid and continue to simmer until the sauce thickens.
  6. Serve the Teochew Style Braised Beef hot with steamed rice.
