Tequeños are a popular Venezuelan appetizer made with cheese wrapped in dough and fried to crispy perfection. In this recipe, we'll take the classic tequeño to the next level by adding a delicious filling and creating an explosion of flavor in every bite!

Tequeño Explosion (Explosión de Tequeños)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 8 oz queso blanco (Venezuelan white cheese), cut into sticks
  • 1/2 cup guava paste, cut into small cubes
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cold butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Gradually add the cold water and knead the dough until smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  3. Roll out the dough into a thin rectangle and cut it into strips.
  4. Place a piece of queso blanco and a cube of guava paste at one end of each dough strip, then roll it up, sealing the edges.
  5. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the tequeños until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot and enjoy the explosion of flavors!
