Thakkali Chutney (chettinad Tomato Chutney)

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2-3 dry red chilies
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon tamarind paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add urad dal, dry red chilies, and asafoetida.
  2. Add chopped onions and curry leaves. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  3. Now, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  4. Add tamarind paste and salt. Mix well and cook for a few more minutes.
  5. Allow the mixture to cool and then blend it into a smooth chutney.
  6. Transfer the chutney to a serving bowl.
