Thakkali Sadam (chettinad Tomato Rice)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 3 large tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 15-20 minutes. Then, drain the water and keep the rice aside.
  2. Heat oil in a large pan or pot. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  4. Now, add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
  5. Add the soaked basmati rice and mix gently with the tomato mixture. Add salt to taste.
  6. Pour 4 cups of water into the pan and bring it to a boil. Then, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the rice cook for 15-20 minutes or until it's fully cooked.
  7. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
