Thakkali Sadam (chettinad Tomato Rice)
Thakkali Sadam, also known as Chettinad Tomato Rice, is a flavorful and aromatic rice dish from the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, India. This dish is known for its rich and spicy flavors, making it a popular choice for lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 3 large tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
- Salt to taste
- 2-3 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water for 15-20 minutes. Then, drain the water and keep the rice aside.
- Heat oil in a large pan or pot. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
- Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Now, add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
- Add the soaked basmati rice and mix gently with the tomato mixture. Add salt to taste.
- Pour 4 cups of water into the pan and bring it to a boil. Then, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the rice cook for 15-20 minutes or until it's fully cooked.
- Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
