Thareed (bahraini Lamb And Chickpea Stew)
Thareed is a traditional Bahraini stew made with tender lamb, chickpeas, and aromatic spices. This hearty and flavorful dish is a staple in Bahraini cuisine and is perfect for a comforting family meal.
Ingredients
- 1 kg lamb, cut into chunks
- 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6 cups water
- 4 large flatbreads, toasted
Instructions
- In a large pot, brown the lamb chunks over medium heat for 5 minutes.
- Add the onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
- Stir in the tomatoes, tomato paste, and spices. Cook for 2 minutes.
- Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
- Add the chickpeas, potatoes, and carrots. Simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Divide the toasted flatbreads among serving bowls and ladle the stew over the top.
