Thareed (bahraini Lamb And Chickpea Stew)

Ingredients

  • 1 kg lamb, cut into chunks
  • 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 6 cups water
  • 4 large flatbreads, toasted

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the lamb chunks over medium heat for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
  3. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato paste, and spices. Cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
  5. Add the chickpeas, potatoes, and carrots. Simmer for an additional 30 minutes.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Divide the toasted flatbreads among serving bowls and ladle the stew over the top.
