Thareed Bil Laham (spiced Lamb And Chickpea Stew With Flatbread)

Ingredients

  • 1 kg lamb, cut into chunks
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 4 cups chicken or lamb broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 pieces of flatbread

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the lamb chunks over medium heat.
  2. Add the onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
  3. Stir in the ground cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Add the chickpeas and broth, and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1.5 hours.
  5. Tear the flatbread into large pieces and add to the stew. Simmer for an additional 15 minutes.
  6. Adjust seasoning if needed, then serve the stew hot.
