Thareed (spiced Lamb And Vegetable Stew)
Thareed is a traditional Qatari stew that features spiced lamb and a variety of vegetables. This hearty and flavorful dish is perfect for a comforting meal, especially during the cooler months.
Ingredients
- 1 kg lamb, cut into chunks
- 2 onions, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 2 potatoes, diced
- 1 zucchini, sliced
- 1 cup chickpeas, cooked
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 4 large pieces of Arabic bread (for serving)
Instructions
- In a large pot, brown the lamb chunks over medium-high heat.
- Add the onions and garlic, and cook until softened.
- Stir in the tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, zucchini, and chickpeas.
- Add the ground turmeric, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Pour in the broth and bring the stew to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 1.5 hours, or until the lamb is tender.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed.
- To serve, tear the Arabic bread into large pieces and place them in individual bowls. Ladle the stew over the bread and serve hot.
