Tian Di Rou (heavenly Pork Belly)
Tian Di Rou, or Heavenly Pork Belly, is a classic dish in Chinese Aristocrat Cuisine. This recipe features succulent pork belly with a rich and flavorful sauce, making it a truly heavenly dish.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs pork belly
- 1 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2-inch piece of ginger, sliced
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 star anise
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 tsp five-spice powder
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- Place the pork belly in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove the pork belly and set aside.
- In the same pot, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, green onions, star anise, cinnamon stick, five-spice powder, black pepper, and water. Bring to a boil.
- Add the pork belly back into the pot. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the pork is tender.
- Remove the pork belly from the pot and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
- Strain the sauce and return it to the pot. Increase heat to medium-high and cook the sauce until it thickens, about 10 minutes.
- Serve the sliced pork belly with the thickened sauce drizzled on top.
