Timman Qeema (iraqi Style Lamb Biryani)
Timman Qeema is a traditional Iraqi dish that combines fragrant lamb with aromatic spices and basmati rice, creating a flavorful and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb lamb, minced
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 4 cups chicken or lamb broth
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
- Salt to taste
- Vegetable oil
Instructions
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, and cook for 1 minute.
- Add the minced lamb and cook until browned, breaking up any lumps with a spoon.
- Stir in the cumin, coriander, turmeric, red chili, and cinnamon powders, and salt to taste. Cook for 2 minutes.
- Add the basmati rice and stir to coat with the spices and lamb mixture.
- Pour in the chicken or lamb broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in the chopped cilantro and mint.
- Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
