Tomato Bhaat (tangy Tomato Rice)
Tomato Bhaat, also known as Tangy Tomato Rice, is a popular dish from Mangalurean Cuisine. It is a flavorful and tangy rice dish that is easy to prepare and perfect for a quick meal.
Ingredients
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 4 large tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/4 cup peanuts
- 2 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Wash the rice and cook it in a rice cooker or a pot. Fluff the rice with a fork and set aside.
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add the peanuts and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Add the chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- Now, add the finely chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
- Stir in the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.
- Add the cooked rice to the tomato mixture and gently mix until well combined.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
