Tomato Rasam (tangy Tomato Rasam)

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ghee or oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Heat ghee or oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add cumin seeds and sauté for a few seconds.
  2. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  3. Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
  4. Add tamarind paste and water. Bring the rasam to a boil and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add freshly chopped coriander leaves and turn off the heat.
  6. Tomato Rasam is ready to be served hot with steamed rice or enjoyed as a comforting soup.
