Transylvanian Apple Strudel (Almás Rétes)

Ingredients

  • 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 10 sheets phyllo dough
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • Confectioners' sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts.
  3. Place a sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Sprinkle with bread crumbs.
  4. Repeat with 4 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter and sprinkling with bread crumbs.
  5. Spread the apple mixture over the layered phyllo dough.
  6. Roll up the strudel, tucking in the ends, and place it seam side down on a baking sheet.
  7. Brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle with additional bread crumbs.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Let it cool slightly, then dust with confectioners' sugar before serving.
