Transylvanian Apple Strudel (Almás Rétes)
Almás Rétes, also known as Transylvanian Apple Strudel, is a traditional dessert from Transylvanian Saxon cuisine. This delicious pastry is filled with sweet and tangy apples, cinnamon, and walnuts, wrapped in layers of thin, flaky dough.
Ingredients
- 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 10 sheets phyllo dough
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- Confectioners' sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts.
- Place a sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it with melted butter. Sprinkle with bread crumbs.
- Repeat with 4 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter and sprinkling with bread crumbs.
- Spread the apple mixture over the layered phyllo dough.
- Roll up the strudel, tucking in the ends, and place it seam side down on a baking sheet.
- Brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle with additional bread crumbs.
- Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let it cool slightly, then dust with confectioners' sugar before serving.
