Transylvanian Stew (Pörkölt)
Pörkölt is a traditional Hungarian stew that is also popular in Transylvania, Romania. This hearty dish is made with tender meat, onions, and paprika, resulting in a rich and flavorful stew that is perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs beef, cut into cubes
- 2 onions, chopped
- 3 tablespoons Hungarian sweet paprika
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 2 bell peppers, sliced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 cups beef broth
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté until translucent.
- Add the beef cubes to the pot and brown on all sides.
- Stir in the paprika and garlic, then add the tomatoes and bell peppers. Season with salt and pepper.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring the stew to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 2 hours, or until the meat is tender.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed, then serve the pörkölt hot with a side of bread or noodles.
