Tteokbokki (떡볶이)
떡볶이 (Tteokbokki) is a popular Korean street food made with chewy rice cakes, fish cakes, and a sweet and spicy sauce. It's a beloved comfort food that is easy to make at home and perfect for sharing with friends and family.
Ingredients
- 1 pound of cylinder-shaped rice cakes
- 4 cups of water
- 5-6 large dried anchovies
- 6 x 8-inch dried kelp
- ½ onion, sliced
- 1 cup of fish cakes, sliced
- 2 tablespoons of hot pepper paste (gochujang)
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon of minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Soak the rice cakes in warm water for 10-15 minutes to soften.
- In a large pot, combine the water, dried anchovies, and dried kelp. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and simmer for 15 minutes to make anchovy stock. Remove the anchovies and kelp from the pot.
- Add the onion, fish cakes, hot pepper paste, sugar, soy sauce, and minced garlic to the pot with the anchovy stock. Stir well to combine.
- Add the softened rice cakes to the pot and simmer for 8-10 minutes, or until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Stir in the sesame oil and season with salt to taste.
- Transfer the tteokbokki to a serving dish and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
