Tuntuvik, also known as Reindeer Stew, is a traditional dish from Chukchi Cuisine, a cuisine that originates from the Chukotka region in the Russian Far East. This hearty stew is a staple in the diet of the indigenous Chukchi people and is a perfect comfort food for cold winter days.

Tuntuvik (reindeer Stew)

Ingredients

  • 500g reindeer meat, cut into chunks
  • 3 large potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups beef or vegetable broth

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the reindeer meat over medium heat for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the onions and garlic, and cook for another 3 minutes.
  3. Pour in the broth and add the bay leaves, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1 hour.
  4. Add the potatoes and carrots, and continue to simmer for another 30-40 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
  5. Remove the bay leaves and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve hot.
