Udupi Tomato Saaru is a traditional South Indian soup from the Dakshina Karnataka Cuisine. This flavorful and tangy soup is made with ripe tomatoes, aromatic spices, and a hint of coconut.

Udupi Tomato Saaru

Ingredients

  • 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
  • 4-5 dried red chilies
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • A few curry leaves
  • 2-3 cups water

Instructions

  1. In a blender, grind the chopped tomatoes, grated coconut, tamarind paste, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, dried red chilies, turmeric powder, and salt to a smooth paste.
  2. Heat oil in a pot, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and the ground tomato-coconut paste.
  3. Add water and bring the saaru to a gentle boil. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Adjust the seasoning and consistency as per your preference.
  5. Serve hot with steamed rice or enjoy as a comforting soup.
