Udupi Tomato Saaru
Udupi Tomato Saaru is a traditional South Indian soup from the Dakshina Karnataka Cuisine. This flavorful and tangy soup is made with ripe tomatoes, aromatic spices, and a hint of coconut.
Ingredients
- 4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
- 4-5 dried red chilies
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- A few curry leaves
- 2-3 cups water
Instructions
- In a blender, grind the chopped tomatoes, grated coconut, tamarind paste, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, dried red chilies, turmeric powder, and salt to a smooth paste.
- Heat oil in a pot, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and the ground tomato-coconut paste.
- Add water and bring the saaru to a gentle boil. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.
- Adjust the seasoning and consistency as per your preference.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or enjoy as a comforting soup.
