Umm Ali (arabic Bread Pudding)
Umm Ali is a traditional Egyptian dessert that has made its way into Kuwaiti cuisine. This delicious bread pudding is made with layers of pastry, nuts, and coconut, all soaked in sweetened milk and baked to perfection.
Ingredients
- 6 sheets of puff pastry
- 1/2 cup of mixed nuts (almonds, pistachios, and cashews)
- 1/4 cup of shredded coconut
- 4 cups of whole milk
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom
- Whipped cream and extra nuts for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Layer the puff pastry sheets in a baking dish, breaking them into smaller pieces if needed.
- Sprinkle the mixed nuts and shredded coconut over the pastry.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cardamom until it just starts to boil.
- Pour the hot milk mixture over the pastry, nuts, and coconut in the baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the milk has thickened.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
- Serve the Umm Ali warm, topped with whipped cream and extra nuts.
