Upma, also known as Uppittu, is a traditional breakfast dish from Uttara Karnataka Cuisine. This savory and flavorful dish is made with semolina (rava) and a variety of spices, making it a popular choice for a quick and delicious meal.

Upma (scrumptious Uppittu)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup semolina (rava)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup peas
  • 1/4 cup carrots, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup green beans, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add cumin seeds and sauté for a few seconds.
  2. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  3. Next, add the chopped vegetables and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Now, add the semolina and roast it on low heat until it turns aromatic and changes color slightly.
  5. Pour in the water, add turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well to avoid lumps.
  6. Cover and cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes or until the upma is cooked and the water is absorbed.
  7. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
