Upma (scrumptious Uppittu)
Upma, also known as Uppittu, is a traditional breakfast dish from Uttara Karnataka Cuisine. This savory and flavorful dish is made with semolina (rava) and a variety of spices, making it a popular choice for a quick and delicious meal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup semolina (rava)
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup peas
- 1/4 cup carrots, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup green beans, finely chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add cumin seeds and sauté for a few seconds.
- Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- Next, add the chopped vegetables and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
- Now, add the semolina and roast it on low heat until it turns aromatic and changes color slightly.
- Pour in the water, add turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well to avoid lumps.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes or until the upma is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
