Vaduz Vegetable Strudel (Vaduz Gemüsestrudel)
Vaduz Gemüsestrudel, or Vaduz Vegetable Strudel, is a traditional dish from the small European country of Liechtenstein. This savory pastry is filled with a delicious mixture of fresh vegetables and herbs, wrapped in flaky phyllo dough, and baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
- 6 sheets phyllo dough
- 2 cups mixed vegetables (such as bell peppers, zucchini, and carrots), diced
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until softened.
- Add the diced vegetables, thyme, oregano, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Place one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean, dry surface. Brush the sheet with melted butter and sprinkle with bread crumbs. Repeat with the remaining sheets, stacking them on top of each other.
- Spoon the vegetable mixture along one long edge of the phyllo stack, leaving a border on the sides. Carefully roll the phyllo and vegetable filling into a log, tucking in the sides as you roll.
- Place the strudel on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the top with additional melted butter.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the strudel is golden brown and crispy.
- Let the strudel cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
