Varenyky Voyage
Varenyky, also known as pierogi, are a popular Ukrainian dish consisting of filled dumplings. This recipe for Varenyky Voyage will take you on a culinary journey through the flavors of Ukraine.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup mashed potatoes
- 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup sour cream (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the egg and water, and knead the dough until smooth. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese, onion, salt, and pepper.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut out circles using a cookie cutter or a glass.
- Place a spoonful of the potato filling in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling and press the edges to seal.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the varenyky in batches for about 5 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
- Remove the varenyky with a slotted spoon and toss them in melted butter.
- Serve hot with a dollop of sour cream if desired.
