Vengaya Pakoda (crispy Onion Pakoras)
Vengaya Pakoda, also known as Crispy Onion Pakoras, is a popular South Indian snack that is perfect for a rainy day or as an appetizer for a meal. These deep-fried onion fritters are crispy, flavorful, and absolutely addictive!
Ingredients
- 2 cups chickpea flour
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine chickpea flour, red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the thinly sliced onions to the flour mixture and toss to coat the onions evenly.
- Sprinkle a little water at a time and mix until the onions are well coated with the flour mixture. The mixture should be thick and sticky.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
- Drop spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil and fry until the pakodas are golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the pakodas from the oil and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serve hot with chutney or ketchup.
