Walnut and Honey Baklava (Μπακλαβάς με Καρύδια και Μέλι)

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough
  • 1 1/2 cups of chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together the chopped walnuts and ground cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Place a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat with 7 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
  5. Sprinkle 2-3 tablespoons of the walnut mixture over the phyllo layers.
  6. Continue layering phyllo and walnuts, brushing each phyllo layer with butter, until all the walnut mixture is used.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. While the baklava is baking, make the honey syrup by combining the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  10. When the baklava is done, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
