Walnut Pie (plăcintă Cu Nucă)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and cold butter pieces. Use your hands to rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add the sour cream and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two equal portions, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the walnuts, sugar, honey, cinnamon, and salt to make the filling.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Roll out one portion of the dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Place the rolled dough into the pie dish.
  6. Spread the walnut filling evenly over the dough in the pie dish.
  7. Roll out the second portion of dough and place it over the filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
  8. Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
  9. Make a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  10. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
  11. Allow the pie to cool before slicing and serving.
