Walnut Pie (plăcintă Cu Nucă)
Walnut Pie, known as "Plăcintă cu nucă" in Moldovan cuisine, is a traditional dessert that is perfect for any occasion. This sweet and nutty pie is a popular treat in Moldova and is often enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and cold butter pieces. Use your hands to rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the sour cream and mix until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two equal portions, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the walnuts, sugar, honey, cinnamon, and salt to make the filling.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll out one portion of the dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Place the rolled dough into the pie dish.
- Spread the walnut filling evenly over the dough in the pie dish.
- Roll out the second portion of dough and place it over the filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
- Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Make a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Allow the pie to cool before slicing and serving.
