Ingredients

  • 1 whole duck, about 4 lbs, cleaned and patted dry
  • 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Rub the duck inside and out with Shaoxing wine, then rinse and pat dry.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, honey, Chinese five-spice powder, and salt.
  3. Stuff the duck with ginger, garlic, and green onions. Brush the duck with the soy sauce mixture.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add vegetable oil. Sear the duck on all sides until browned.
  5. Transfer the duck to a pot, add the remaining soy sauce mixture, and enough water to cover the duck. Simmer for 1 hour, turning the duck occasionally.
  6. Once the duck is tender, remove it from the pot and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  7. Serve the Fragrant Five-Spice Duck with steamed rice and your favorite vegetables.
