Wu Xiang Ya, or Fragrant Five-Spice Duck, is a classic dish from Shandong Cuisine known for its rich flavors and aromatic spices. This dish is a perfect combination of tender duck meat and a blend of five fragrant spices, creating a mouthwatering and unforgettable dining experience.
Ingredients
- 1 whole duck, about 4 lbs, cleaned and patted dry
- 2 tablespoons Shaoxing wine
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 slices ginger
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 green onions, chopped
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions
- Rub the duck inside and out with Shaoxing wine, then rinse and pat dry.
- In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, honey, Chinese five-spice powder, and salt.
- Stuff the duck with ginger, garlic, and green onions. Brush the duck with the soy sauce mixture.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add vegetable oil. Sear the duck on all sides until browned.
- Transfer the duck to a pot, add the remaining soy sauce mixture, and enough water to cover the duck. Simmer for 1 hour, turning the duck occasionally.
- Once the duck is tender, remove it from the pot and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
- Serve the Fragrant Five-Spice Duck with steamed rice and your favorite vegetables.
