Xit Kodi, also known as Goan Fish Curry, is a traditional dish from the Goan Catholic Cuisine. This tangy and spicy curry is made with fresh fish and a blend of aromatic spices, making it a flavorful and comforting meal.

Xit Kodi (goan Fish Curry)

Ingredients

  • 500g fish, cut into pieces
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 green chili, slit
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2-3 sprigs of fresh curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil

Instructions

  1. Marinate the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
  3. Add the grated ginger, minced garlic, and green chili. Sauté for a few minutes.
  4. Now, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  5. Once the tomatoes are cooked, add red chili powder and mix well.
  6. Pour in the coconut milk and add the marinated fish pieces. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked through.
  7. Garnish with fresh curry leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
