Yellow Pea Curry (ghuguni Tarkari)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups yellow peas
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Soak the yellow peas in water for 4-5 hours or overnight.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Now, add the ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, and tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
  5. Stir in the turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
  6. Add the soaked yellow peas and mix everything together.
  7. Pour in enough water to cover the peas and bring it to a boil.
  8. Reduce the heat, cover the pan, and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the peas are tender.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
