Yemeni Spiced Fish Curry (Samak Bel-Qaliya)
Samak Bel-Qaliya is a traditional Yemeni spiced fish curry that is bursting with flavor. This dish is a perfect blend of aromatic spices and tender fish, creating a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb white fish fillets, such as cod or haddock
- 2 onions, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 cup fish or vegetable broth
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, ground turmeric, ground cinnamon, and cayenne pepper to the pot. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Place the fish fillets on top of the onion and spice mixture in the pot. Pour the diced tomatoes and broth over the fish. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring the curry to a gentle simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve the Samak Bel-Qaliya hot with steamed rice or flatbread.
