Yemeni Spiced Okra Stew (Bamia Bel-Zeit)
Bamia Bel-Zeit is a traditional Yemeni spiced okra stew that is bursting with flavor and perfect for a comforting meal. This vegetarian dish is easy to make and is packed with aromatic spices that will tantalize your taste buds.
Ingredients
- 1 pound okra, washed and trimmed
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt to taste
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 cups vegetable broth
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, ground turmeric, cayenne pepper, and salt. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste, and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the okra and vegetable broth to the pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the okra is tender.
- Adjust the seasoning if needed, then serve the Bamia Bel-Zeit hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
