Zong Zi Ji (steamed Glutinous Rice With Chicken)

Zong Zi Ji, also known as Steamed Glutinous Rice with Chicken, is a traditional dish from Guangxi Cuisine that is often enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival. This savory and aromatic dish is made by wrapping seasoned glutinous rice and marinated chicken in bamboo leaves and then steaming until tender and flavorful.

Zong Zi Ji (steamed Glutinous Rice With Chicken)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups glutinous rice
  • 1 pound chicken thighs, diced
  • 4 dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked and diced
  • 4 slices ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • 6 bamboo leaves, soaked

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, marinate the diced chicken with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, and white pepper. Set aside for 20 minutes.
  2. Rinse the glutinous rice and soak in water for 2 hours. Drain well.
  3. Heat a wok over medium heat, add the marinated chicken, shiitake mushrooms, ginger, and garlic. Stir-fry until the chicken is cooked through. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Take a bamboo leaf and place a spoonful of glutinous rice in the center. Add a spoonful of the chicken mixture on top of the rice. Fold the leaf to form a triangular shape and secure with kitchen twine.
  5. Place the wrapped zong zi in a steamer and steam over high heat for 1 hour.
  6. Remove the zong zi from the steamer and let cool for a few minutes before unwrapping and serving.
