Zongzi (dragon Boat Festival Rice Rolls)
Zongzi, also known as Dragon Boat Festival Rice Rolls, are a traditional Chinese dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. These delicious rice rolls are commonly enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
Ingredients
- 1 kg glutinous rice
- 300g pork belly, cut into small pieces
- 10 salted duck egg yolks
- 100g dried shrimp
- 10 dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked and sliced
- 10 bamboo leaves, soaked in water
- 10 long strings for tying
Instructions
- Soak the glutinous rice in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Marinate the pork belly with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and white pepper for 30 minutes.
- Assemble the zongzi by placing a bamboo leaf on a flat surface, then add a spoonful of soaked glutinous rice, followed by a piece of pork belly, dried shrimp, shiitake mushroom, and a salted duck egg yolk in the center.
- Fold the bamboo leaf to encase the filling and tie the zongzi securely with a string.
- Repeat the process for the remaining ingredients.
- Place the zongzi in a large pot, cover with water, and simmer for 2 hours until the rice is cooked through.
- Remove the zongzi from the water and let them cool slightly before unwrapping and serving.
