Zunka Bhakri (झुणका भाकरी)

झुणका भाकरी (Zunka Bhakri) is a traditional Maharashtrian dish that consists of a spicy chickpea flour (besan) curry served with a thick, unleavened bread called bhakri. It is a popular dish in rural Maharashtra and is often enjoyed with a side of raw onions and green chilies.

Zunka Bhakri (झुणका भाकरी)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups chickpea flour (besan)
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  2. Add chopped onions and green chilies. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Lower the heat and add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  4. Gradually add chickpea flour (besan) while continuously stirring to avoid lumps.
  5. Cook the mixture on low heat for 5-7 minutes until it becomes a thick, dry curry.
  6. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with bhakri.
