Zwetschgenkuchen (plum Streusel Cake)
Zwetschgenkuchen, also known as Plum Streusel Cake, is a traditional dessert from Hessian cuisine. This delicious cake is made with juicy plums and a crumbly streusel topping, perfect for enjoying with a cup of coffee or tea.
Ingredients
- 500g plums, pitted and halved
- 200g all-purpose flour
- 150g granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- 125g unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2-3 tbsp breadcrumbs
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch springform pan.
- Arrange the halved plums in the bottom of the pan and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
- Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients and mix until crumbly.
- Take 2/3 of the crumbly mixture and press it onto the plums in the pan.
- Beat the egg and vanilla extract together, then pour over the crumb base.
- Sprinkle the remaining crumbly mixture over the top.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing the sides of the springform pan.
- Transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely before serving.
