Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup yellow lentils (arhar dal)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the whole wheat flour with water to form a smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, rinse the lentils and cook them in a pressure cooker with water, turmeric, and salt until soft.
  3. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, and let them splutter. Add the chopped onions, green chilies, and ginger-garlic paste. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
  4. Add the cooked lentils to the pan along with red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well and cook for a few minutes. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  5. Divide the dough into small balls and roll them out into small circles. Place a spoonful of the lentil filling in the center, seal the edges, and roll out into a flatbread.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pan and fry the dal puris until they are golden and crispy.
  7. Serve hot with yogurt, pickle, or chutney.
